Background of the Study
Quality healthcare is fundamental to achieving positive health outcomes, yet rural areas in Nigeria often suffer from substandard service delivery due to infrastructural and resource limitations. In Edo State, public healthcare services in rural areas are critical for providing essential care to populations that may otherwise have limited access to medical facilities (Oluwaseun, 2023). These services are intended to offer a wide range of healthcare interventions, from preventive care to emergency treatment. However, challenges such as outdated equipment, inadequate staffing, and insufficient funding have been reported to compromise the quality of care in these settings. Recent evaluations highlight that quality in healthcare is not solely determined by the availability of services, but also by their effectiveness, safety, and patient-centeredness (Adeniyi, 2024). In rural Edo State, disparities in service quality can lead to delayed diagnoses, mismanagement of diseases, and ultimately, poorer health outcomes. Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive assessment of the quality of public healthcare services, identification of bottlenecks, and the formulation of strategies to enhance service delivery (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the central role of government-owned hospitals and clinics in rural Edo State, the quality of public healthcare services remains a persistent concern. Many rural residents report long waiting times, inadequate facilities, and a lack of essential medical supplies, all of which contribute to suboptimal care. These challenges are compounded by a shortage of qualified healthcare professionals and poor maintenance of medical infrastructure. Consequently, patients in rural areas are often forced to travel long distances for quality care or rely on unregulated private providers, which may further compromise their health outcomes. The gap between healthcare policy objectives and actual service delivery undermines public confidence in the healthcare system and hinders efforts to achieve health equity in Edo State (Chukwuma, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on rural communities in Edo State served by public healthcare facilities. Data will be collected through patient surveys, interviews with healthcare staff, and facility assessments. Limitations include potential response bias and variations in service quality across different regions.
